Discussion with Groep-één of the University Council
Dear Cosmos Members Every year on the first of September, we see the same ritual unfold. Thousands of new students taking their first steps on the TU/e campus, going to their first lectures, speaking their first words to people who will become their friends for life. With their first steps on campus, our first-years also take their first steps into the TU/e community. A community consisting of a near uncountable number of associations, several enormous buildings and everything you could reasonably need in your student life, located on the TU/e campus. In truth, our campus is more like a small country, then some actual countries. Similar to a “real” country, there is a governmental structure on the TU/e and quite fortunately for our students, the inhabitants of the TU/e, this government is not a dictatorship of CEO’s. The democratic arm of the government of the TU/e consists of many councils, but ultimately comes down to the University Council. It is their role to advise, influence and agree with the Executive Board, which makes them quite similar to a “Tweede Kamer” or a Senate in politics. In this University Council there are 9 seats for students which are split amongst two parties: the fraction Groep-één has 5 seats and the ESR has 4 seats. It is their job to fight for the needs of the students, and to translate your opinions into policies. Which brings us to the core of this message: the fraction Groep-één has indicated that they very much like to involve the members of Cosmos in this decision making process. Therefore, on Monday the 25th of September they will organize an Information Session for the members of Cosmos. The goal is to have a discussion on the current issues in the University Council, as well as some topics that have not come up yet. Therefore, we welcome you all to this event on Monday the 25th of September at 18:30 in the Common Room. Everyone is welcome to voice their opinions and to participate in the discussion! Till Monday!

There, you will also learn how to anticipate a possible culture shock and how culture impacts your daily life. And oh yes… bring your own story to the scene because we are also going to practice lots of daily situations. Midsummer is one of the biggest events in Scandinavia where people celebrate the longest day of the year. During our outside event, you have the chance to participate in different activities, such as Scandinavian games and a beautiful flower crown workshop. Completing several activities will be rewarded with a real Scandinavian drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). To really get ourselves into the midsummer mood we’ll set up a maypole and might start dancing around it as the evening goes on. A midsummer celebration would be nothing without a BBQ and a few drinks. Therefore we will provide you with the opportunity to get food from the BBQ. The bar committee of GEWIS will also sell beer and soft drinks. The price for the food depends on the amount of people that want to BBQ but it can be expected somewhere around 5€. Please keep in mind that signing up for food means paying! There are 20 places each for COSMOS and GEWIS (excluding SCIFI members). Don't worry if the event is full, sign up anyway and we'll put you on the waiting list. Also, let us know if you are going to BBQ with us and whether you’d like to have the alcoholic or non-alcoholic version of the Scandinavian drinks. If you are planning to drink alcohol, don’t forget to bring your ID. Hoping to see you there!
